“If it isn’t my favorite Fielding,” Declan blurted out as Fiona walked up the drive.
“Heya, handsome.” Fiona rushed to Declan and pulled him into a bone-crushing hug.
“Missed you too, squirt, but I can’t breathe,” Declan gasped.
“Sorry,” she stepped back.
“She’s your favorite Fielding?” Declan looked up to find an unexpected sight. “I might be a little jealous.”
Declan watched as the eldest Fielding girl made her way up the drive, rolling two suitcases behind her. The sight of her took his breath away. What is she doing here? Oh, shit. Maybe she broke up with the boyfriend.
“I think you broke him, Cyn.” Fiona took one of the suitcases from her sister. “I’ll let you catch up and meet you inside in a few.”
Declan heard Fiona walk through the garage with one suitcase and shook himself out of his stupor.
“I didn’t expect to see you. What happened to Hawaii?”
Cyn shifted her eyes down to his boots. “Um, it’s a bit of a story. One I’d like to tell you, but maybe someplace warmer.”
He placed a gloved finger beneath her chin and tilted her head up so her eyes met his. “Everything okay? Is Greg …” He dropped his hand, unsure of how to ask about the boyfriend.
“We’re more off than on at the moment, but we can talk about it later.” She lifted her bare fingers to his beard. “I don’t think I’ve ever seen it so long.” She played with the soft ends that almost reached his chest.
“It’s a good insulator when it’s this cold.” He smiled and tried not to sigh at the feel of her so close.
“Cyn!” Hayden cried and ran to his sister. He picked her up and twirled her around several times before he set her back on her feet. “Fi said there was a present in the driveway. I almost thought it was a car.”
“Not disappointed?” she asked her baby brother.
“No way! Declan and I have to fix the hoop, and then we can all have dinner like we used to.” Hayden’s cheeks flushed with excitement. Declan was jealous for a split second. He’d never known the feeling of looking up to a sibling.
“Not if you’ll be throwing any food. I can’t count the number of times you’ve pelted me with mashed potatoes.”
“I swear.” Hayden placed his hand over his heart. “No food fights.”
“Okay. I’ll see you guys inside in a little while.” She smiled at both men before walking through the garage and into the house.
“You know, this might be the right time,” Hayden said as he elbowed Declan in the ribs.
“Right time for what?”
Hayden smacked Declan on the chest and laughed. “Right time to tell my sister you’re madly in love with her.”
