Exclusive excerpt from Immortality Island
“Time to get you back to camp,” Alexander says. “Would you like an escort? Sterling or Corey? I’m rooting for Sterling, but I’ve got a thing for prickly men in need of a queen’s touch.” He winks. “I have a sixth sense about these things.”
“It’s not . . . like that,” I stammer.
“Don’t tell me all you care about is competing. Haylee tried that. It didn’t work.”
My shoulders sag. “Not everyone finds true love.”
“Sweetie, you’re way too young to give up on love.”
I shake my head. “I haven’t given up.”
“That’s the spirit. Now, let’s return you to your team. They’ve been worried.” Alexander hands me my wand and hooks his arm around my shoulder, pulling me to the door.
He escorts me into a large, mostly empty room where Sterling slouches in a chair staring at his phone screen. The sound of our footsteps has him on his feet in an instant, pocketing his phone.
“And look who it is,” Alexander mutters in amusement, then raises his voice. “Sterling, be a doll and escort Joni to Starfish Sanctuary.”
“Shouldn’t you keep her overnight?”
“I’m fine,” I say. Just because he saved me doesn’t mean he gets to treat me like some weakling.
Alexander lifts a brow. “You heard the lady.”
“And I don’t require an escort,” I add.
“Too bad,” Sterling growls.
“Oh, my.” Alexander fans his face.
Sterling and I turn our glares on him. He just laughs and says, “I’ll let you two work it out. Toodles.” He waves the tips of his fingers before striding away.
“I just want to get back to my teammates,” I tell Sterling. “I don’t need your assistance.”
“Assistance.” He scoffs. “Is that what you call saving you?”
“The only reason you saved me is because you want me to serve you.” I stomp for the door, berating myself for letting myself think for one second that what Sterling did was romantic.
He zips after me, falling into step at my side as I start along the jungle path.
“How are you feeling?” he asks.
I can’t handle the concern in his voice. He’s a vampire. He doesn’t have the faintest clue what it’s like to walk the tightrope between life and death. Today was nearly my last.
Tomorrow could be.
“I’m fine,” I repeat.
“Clearly.” Sterling’s tone is so snarky and sarcastic, it pulls unexpected laughter from my lips.
He looks as startled by my reaction as I feel. I frown and lift my wand.
“I could spell you to turn around and go back to your cabana.” When he looks at my wand, I drum the tips of my fingers along the hem of my shorts. “Or freeze you in place.”
He folds his arms. “Is that any way to treat your savior and future master?”
Another laugh threatens to escape, even as irritation coils tight in my chest. He infuriates me. He captivates and challenges me. And the worst part is how alive he makes me feel when he does all three at the same time.
I hide my amusement behind a huff and start walking again.
